SHETTLES METHOD
According to Dr. Landrum Shettles his method is "the method best supported by scientific evidence". He published the book "How to choose the sex of your baby" that has been in print in various editions since 1960s.
There are two types of sperm: X-bearing sperm and Y-bearing sperm. The egg, from the mother, is always an X. If the X-bearing sperm penetrate the egg, then the baby is a girl (XX). If the Y-bearing sperm penetrate the egg, then the baby is a boy (XY).
According to the theory, the sperm chromosomes that will make a girl (X) and the ones that will make a son (Y) have different properties.
The sperm that will conceive a girl are slow-moving but can survive longer in the cervical environment. They can linger for up to 5 days waiting for the egg. The sperm that will conceive a male child are fast and smaller but they die more quickly.
Shettles theory for conceiving a girl:
- You should have sex 2½-3 days before ovulation to allow the Y-bearing sperm to die off before the egg becomes available during ovulation.
- Women should avoid orgasms because it makes the vagina less favorable for the X-bearing sperm that prefer the acidic environment.
- Avoid sexual positions that involve deep penetration.
Shettles Theory to Conceive a Boy
- Use sexual positions with deep penetration, this gives preference to the supposedly faster, but less hearty Y-bearing sperm.
- Timing of intercourse is most important factor. Have sex as close to ovulation as possible (the ideal time for intercourse is 12 hours before ovulation), to take advantage of the speed of the Y-bearing sperm.
- Women should have orgasms when trying to conceive a boy, and ideally just before or the same time as their partner.
O+12 METHOD
O+12 (pronounced "oh plus twelve") is a method for conceiving a girl. The reason for the name: O+12, is that the method generally recommends having sex 12 hours after ovulation. Other rules of this method is that the man must not ejaculate for 7 days before sexual intercourse (and ideally longer than 7 days). Charting your cervical mucus and BBT is essential as you will have to know when ovulation has occurred to ensure you time your intercourse correctly. O+12 is contrary to the Shettles method, which predicts a boy will be conceived on the day ovulation.
The O+12 method wasn't was proposed by an Australian mother, a Shettles devotee who had six sons before stumbling on the idea that a girl might be conceived by timing intercourse just after ovulation, contrary to Shettles' advice. After giving birth at last to a daughter, she shared her method with other mothers, many of whom were successful in conceiving a daughter as well.

The O+12 Key: Pinpointing Ovulation
Before getting into the detailed instructions for O+12, it's enough to say that a successful O+12 attempt depends on being able to pinpoint ovulation. You will need to learn how your body works. Best way to detect ovulation is to chart your basal body temeperature, use ovulation kits and check your cervical mucus.
O+12 Instructions
Your husband must not ejaculate for at least 7 days before intercourse (and preferably longer).
No ejaculation in any way :)! Try to get him to abstain from the first day of your cycle.
The reason for this is that since female sperm supposedly live longer, an "old" batch of sperm should have more female than male sperm (about 2% more, according to some data).
Have intercourse once only, 8 to 20 hours after ovulation. You you get your positive OPK-this means you may ovulate in 8-48 hours. This is the time to watch the cm and cervix.
Start counting the 8-20 hours when...
• Any sharp O pain has subsided.
• Your CM begins to change from EWCM to creamy or sticky.
• Your cervix begins to become less soft and high.
You should wait to have intercourse until you have seen one high BBT(termal shift) to confirm that ovulation has truly past. This is the only way to truly confim O. Do NOT have intercourse again until you are sure you are no longer fertile. You are past your fertile stage when you have had THREE high temperatures on your BBT chart.
Along with O+12, many also try:
• The girl diet
• Supplements (calcium and magnesium, cranberry)
• Douching before intercourse with a lemon douche to lower your PH (mix the fresh-squeezed juice of 1/2 lemon with an equal part of water, and insert with the empty bottle from a regular store-bought douche).
There’s no proven studies to fully support either method, however a 90% success rate is surely worth a try (especially if you’ve been unsuccessful with everything else until now).
I will hopefully try this method to TTC a girl next year. Wish me luck :)!
